Claude Connects to Microsoft 365 – Emails, Teams Chats and SharePoint Directly in Your AI Assistant

Since April 2026, users of Claude — Anthropic's AI assistant — can connect their account directly to Microsoft 365. This means Claude can read your emails on request, search SharePoint and OneDrive documents, analyse Teams chats, and review calendar entries.

That's a significant step. But as with any new AI integration, it's worth taking a sober look at the what, the how, and the why.

What the Microsoft 365 Connector can actually do

With the connector enabled, Claude can access the following Microsoft 365 services:

  • Outlook: Search email threads, summarise conversations, extract action items
  • Teams: Read chats, generate meeting summaries, track decisions
  • SharePoint & OneDrive: Find and analyse documents across multiple locations
  • Calendar: Review meetings and their content, process transcripts

Practical example: instead of scrolling through 150 emails manually, ask Claude: "What are the open items from Project X over the past two weeks?" — and get a structured answer based on your own data.

What Claude cannot do yet

The connector is currently limited to read-only access. For now, Claude cannot:

  • send emails
  • create or edit documents
  • write Teams messages
  • create or delete calendar entries

For a first release this is a solid foundation — and it's safe to assume more capabilities will follow.

How the permissions work

The connector uses delegated permissions — technically implemented via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This means Claude can only access content that the signed-in user already has access to.

What an employee cannot see in SharePoint, Claude cannot see either. Sensitivity labels and encrypted content remain protected. Permissions can be revoked at any time.

For the initial activation within an organisation, consent from a Microsoft Entra Global Administrator is required — a sensible safeguard that prevents individual users from connecting AI services to company data without oversight.

Requirements

The connector works on all Claude plans (Free, Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise) — but requires a business Microsoft 365 account tied to a Microsoft Entra tenant.

Personal Microsoft accounts (@outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com) are not supported.

Data protection: what Swiss businesses need to consider

This is where it gets relevant for Swiss companies: when Claude accesses Microsoft 365 data, that data leaves your own tenant and is processed by Anthropic's Claude model. Anthropic is a US-based company — data transfers are therefore subject to the revised Data Protection Act (revDSG) and qualify as third-country transfers.

For many use cases — internal communications, general documents, project notes — this is manageable. For particularly sensitive data (patient records, financial data, HR information), the use should be legally reviewed before activation.

Another powerful option worth considering is Private AI: a language model running directly in your own infrastructure, with no data transfers to external providers. More on this in our article on AI services.

Assessment: a meaningful step in the right direction

The integration of Claude with Microsoft 365 shows where things are heading: AI assistants that don't work in isolation, but where the data actually lives. The technical implementation — delegated permissions, read-only access, admin consent — is well thought through and shows that security was considered from the start.

For businesses already using Claude and Microsoft 365, this is a practical extension. For companies looking to integrate AI into their working environment for the first time, it's a good entry point — provided data protection questions are clarified upfront.
