Vibe Coding vs Real Software Engineering

The term "Vibe Coding" describes a development style where developers use AI tools like GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT to generate code quickly – often without a deep understanding of the generated code. The results are impressively fast, but the risks are frequently underestimated.
What Is Vibe Coding?
Vibe Coding describes the practice of adopting AI-generated code snippets directly without fully understanding or reviewing them. The focus is on fast productivity – on the "vibe" of developing – rather than on a solid technical foundation.
The phenomenon is widespread in startup environments and among solo developers. For simple prototypes, it may work. For production systems in companies, however, it is dangerous.
The Risks in a Business Context
Security vulnerabilities: AI tools generate code based on patterns in training data – including insecure patterns. SQL injection, XSS vulnerabilities, and insecure cryptography are not uncommon in AI-generated code.
Maintainability: Code that nobody truly understands is hard to maintain. When bugs arise or new requirements emerge, the problem becomes visible.
Compliance: Regulated industries (finance, healthcare) require traceable, documented, and reviewed software development. Vibe Coding does not meet these requirements.
Technical debt: Quickly generated code without architectural understanding accumulates technical debt – and someone has to pay for it eventually.
Real Software Engineering as the Standard
Professional software development doesn't mean avoiding AI tools. It means using them responsibly:
- Code reviews for AI-generated code
- Security scans and static analysis
- Clear architectural decisions
- Documentation and tests
- Understanding of the technologies used
Our Approach
At Business IT Partners, we use AI tools deliberately and responsibly – as a productivity lever, not as a replacement for engineering expertise. Every line of code we deliver is reviewed, understandable, and maintainable long-term.
